Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park
This park preserves the coastal sections of two ahupua'a,
or tradtional land divisions, Kaloko and Honokohau.
In the past, hundreds of Hawaiians lived here.
A halau, or long house.
This partially reconstructed kuapa, or rock wall,
separates the Kaloko fishpond from the ocean.
Fish were raised here for food.
These low circular stone walls were used as planters for growing crops.
As with most of Hawaii Island, lava is ubiquitous. . .
. . . even offshore.
